Success Story
Moka Joe Coffee
"Owning Moka Joe Coffee I have come to know many challenges during the nine years of development. Most challenges have been solved with common sense and compassion for our customers and employees. But, the critical challenges have been mentally crippling. During the times where I have felt isolated and powerless I have had the luxury of being able to turn to the Center for Economic Vitality (CEV).
The CEV has helped me restructure my energy into planning for the future instead of wasting that energy on putting out fires. Some of the areas of planning have included hiring employees, understanding my financials and planning on the vitality of the company for the future years.
Last year alone my counselor, Eric Grimstead, at the CEV helped me evaluate the option of selling out, versus taking on an equity partner, versus tackling how to stay put and to grow. I developed a strong sense of empowerment through understanding the options presented.
Having my financials finally in order gave me the confidence to apply for The Count Me In, Make Mine a Million Dollar Business last year. From across the country, 1,500 women applied, and 25 were selected to compete in Florida. And 15 won the competition. I was one of the 15 and have received awards given out by the organization. Count Me In for Women's Economic Independence, Inc. is a not-for-profit provider of resources, business education and community support for women entrepreneurs seeking to grow micro businesses to million dollar enterprises.
Both Make Mine a Million and the Center for Economic Vitality have proven to be life lines for a small business like mine. I have felt very fortunate that the Center for Economic Vitality has been through everything from start up to owning a $600,000 + business. I can count on professional expert advice when it comes to critical decisions.
I have to say that all of the support may have been given "free of charge" but its value has been immeasurable. I feel a sense of reassurance after leaving each appointment - knowing that this business will continue to grow with support from my community and the Center for Economic Vitality."
