Advancing the Economic Vitality of Our Communities

About Us

Only the name has changed. The services remain the same.

On January 1, 2009 we officially became the Center for Economic Vitality (formerly the Small Business Development Center). The process has been an evolution. The short explanation as to why, is that the word “small” doesn’t fit us anymore. The new name better reflects the many ways we have evolved and our vision for the future.

After 24 years of operating as a small business development center, we completed an intense integrated re-branding process that included input from clients and funders. We now have a name that we feel better reflects the breadth of services we provide and the expertise we can contribute to our communities while still being an economic development outreach program for Western Washington University (WWU).

Our services have not changed.

We are actively involved in helping businesses and communities thrive not only in Whatcom County but throughout the Pacific Northwest.

While business counseling in Whatcom County has served as our foundation, we are now home to one of the most productive economic gardening programs in the United States as illustrated in on our impact numbers. And we have also expanded our special project capabilities due to increased demand.

The Center for Economic Vitality provides three core services:
